The quest to answer “Who am I?” is shrouded in mystery, for it is a search to find the essence of our being and personal identity. Beyond the story-lines of our pasts, the heartbreaks, and the triumphs in our lives, Christianity and other spiritual traditions endeavor to explain and resolve the reason and purpose for our existence by answering the question, “Who am I?”
Through thousands of years of history, we understand there is no conclusive answer for the incredible complexity of our conscious state and the spirit which sustains us as a living soul. However, we sense an inner awareness and being beyond the physical realm. We contemplate a voice crying in the wilderness, a blessed hope. We sustain a belief that love holds the visible and invisible world together and that one day love will bring us full circle with a return to the beginning without end. In the middle of our broken lives, light enters into the night as Jesus declares, “I am the light of the world.” In our darkest unlovable moments, the suffering Christ becomes present reveals love and restoration of wholeness for us and all creation. We discover at the baptism of Jesus who He is as the spirit descends like a dove upon Him, and a voice with heavens authority declares, “This is my Son, with whom I am well pleased.” (Mt. 3:17) Immediately He is led into the wilderness and tempted by Satan to give away His spiritual destiny and divine birthright as the son of God. Christ withstands the onslaught to question and compromise His calling and begins the journey to live out the revelation of being the son of God.
Likewise, we have a blessed hope in the darkness and suffering of the world. We may see the light that we are sons and daughters of God through Christ. Of all the possible answers to “Who am I?” I am a child of God! I no longer am a slave to fear! (You are my Child)
