How to Find Rest in Jesus When You Feel Worn Out
How to Find Rest in Jesus When You Feel Worn Out
You do not have to finish everything before you come. Jesus welcomes the heart you have today.
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28, KJV
Sometimes the day is over, but you are still carrying it.
You sit down and remember the conversation you wish had gone differently. You think about the person who needs you, the work waiting tomorrow, and the thing you have been trying to hold together for weeks.
Your body has stopped moving. Your heart is still working.
Perhaps you have been telling yourself that you will rest when you catch up. When the house is quiet. When the problem is settled. When everyone else is okay.
But Jesus invites you to come while you are weary. Finding rest in Jesus begins with bringing Him what is unfinished, rather than waiting until you have nothing left to carry.
You do not have to hide your weariness
It can be difficult to admit that you are tired when people depend on you. You may feel grateful for your life and still feel stretched thin by it. You may love your family, your work, and your church while needing time to breathe.
You can tell Jesus the whole truth. You can be thankful and exhausted in the same prayer.
His invitation in Matthew 11 is addressed to people who are already carrying a heavy load. They do not need to explain away their weakness before approaching Him.
Begin with an honest sentence: Lord, I am tired, and I need Your help. Let that be enough to begin the conversation.
Rest in Jesus grows through learning His way
In the verses that follow His invitation, Jesus asks us to take His yoke and learn from Him. He describes Himself as meek and lowly in heart and promises rest for our souls (Matthew 11:29–30).
This is an invitation into life with Him. We learn to receive His guidance, depend on His grace, and walk at a pace that makes room to listen.
Sometimes that means releasing an outcome you cannot control. Sometimes it means asking someone for help, keeping a reasonable boundary, or allowing a task to wait until tomorrow.
Your responsibilities may still be there after you pray. Yet you can return to them remembering that you are loved, that you have limits, and that Jesus is with you.
Come and Rest
We created Come and Rest as a gentle invitation to bring your burdens to Jesus. One line gives voice to the welcome at the heart of the song:
“Come as you are. I’ll carry the rest.”
These are song lyrics, reflecting the invitation of Matthew 11. They give us a simple place to begin: arriving honestly, opening our hands, and trusting Jesus with what feels too heavy to carry alone.
Let the song accompany a few quiet minutes of prayer. Listen without trying to produce a particular feeling. When it ends, leave a little room for silence.
A small practice for coming to Jesus
You do not need a perfect setting. Begin wherever you can safely pause for a few minutes.
- Notice what you are carrying. Name one concern, responsibility, or disappointment that feels heavy today.
- Bring it into prayer. Tell Jesus what feels difficult, including anything you have been reluctant to admit.
- Read Matthew 11:28–30 slowly. Pay attention to His invitation to come and learn from Him.
- Choose one response to His care. Ask for help, take a needed break, or release the expectation that everything must be settled tonight.
You may need to return to this invitation tomorrow. Each return is another opportunity to practice trusting Him with your real life.
Jesus, meet me in my weariness.
Lord, You know what I am carrying and how tired I feel. Help me come to You honestly. Teach me to receive Your care, ask for help, and release what is beyond my control. Give me wisdom for the responsibilities that are mine and grace to leave some things unfinished today. As I learn Your way, help my soul find rest in You. Amen.
