How to Pray When You Don’t Know What to Say

When words are hard to find, you can still turn toward God.

You finally have a quiet moment to pray. You close your eyes, but instead of words, you find a tangle of thoughts. Maybe you are tired. Maybe something hurts too much to name. Maybe it has simply been a long time since you prayed, and you wonder how to begin.

You do not have to sort it all out before coming to God. Prayer can begin with the truth of this moment: “Lord, I don’t know what to say.”

God meets us in our weakness

Romans 8:26 speaks to those moments when we do not know what to pray. Paul writes that the Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes for us. This is a comfort when we cannot find words for what we are carrying.

“The Spirit helps us in our weakness.”

Romans 8:26

We sometimes imagine that a good prayer must sound certain, peaceful, or beautifully put together. Yet we can bring God our confusion as honestly as our gratitude. We can ask for help without knowing what help should look like. We can sit before Him when all we can manage is a sigh.

The Spirit’s help does not depend on our ability to explain ourselves perfectly.

Begin with what is true

If you are wondering how to pray when you don’t know what to say, start small. Speak one honest sentence. “I’m worried about tomorrow.” “I miss them.” “Thank You for getting me through today.” “Please help me.”

There may be more to say after that sentence. There may not. You can pause and remember that God is present with you as you are.

  1. Pause. Take a breath and notice what you are feeling without trying to change it first.
  2. Tell God one true thing. Use ordinary words, even if they feel unfinished.
  3. Borrow words from Scripture. Read a psalm, or begin with the prayer Jesus taught His disciples.
  4. Leave room for quiet. You can stop speaking and stay with God for a moment.

If your mind wanders, gently return. If emotion comes, you do not need to hide it. This is time with God, not a test of how well you pray.

Make space for prayer in the evening

Sometimes the words we could not find during a busy day begin to surface at night. If evenings are when you need a little help slowing down, our Night Prayer playlist on Spotify can offer a gentle place to begin. Listen to a song, then pause and bring God whatever remains on your heart.

A place to write what you cannot yet say aloud

For days when a pen feels easier than spoken prayer, the Be Still Prayer Journal offers space to slow down, reflect, and bring your thoughts to God. You can begin with a single sentence. There is no need to fill a page.

A prayer for when words are hard to find

Lord, I am here. You know what is on my heart, even when I cannot put it into words. Help me bring You what is true today. Thank You for the help of Your Spirit in my weakness. Teach me to rest in Your presence, one moment at a time. Amen.
