Finding Peace in God When You Feel Anxious
You can bring your unsettled thoughts to God before you know how everything will turn out.
Anxiety often asks us to live through tomorrow before tomorrow arrives.
You may be sitting at the kitchen table, driving to work, or trying to fall asleep when your thoughts begin moving ahead. What if the news is bad? What if this does not work out? What if I cannot handle what comes next?
Soon you are carrying not only what is happening today, but every possibility you can imagine for the days ahead.
If that sounds familiar, you do not need to feel ashamed. An anxious moment does not make you a person of weak faith. It is a moment in which you can turn honestly toward the God who cares for you.
Bring Him what you are carrying
When Scripture invites us to give our anxieties to God, it does not ask us to pretend they are small. Some concerns are heavy. Some situations remain uncertain. Bringing them to Him means we no longer have to hold them alone.
You can begin with an honest sentence: “Lord, this is what I am afraid of.”
Name the appointment you are dreading. The conversation you keep replaying. The person you love and cannot protect from every hardship. God already knows what is on your heart, and you are welcome to speak it in His presence.
Return to the day God has given you
Jesus speaks tenderly about worry in Matthew 6. He points His listeners toward the Father’s care and calls them back from tomorrow’s troubles to the day before them.
That does not mean you cannot make plans or take a necessary step. It means tomorrow does not need to occupy your whole heart today.
Ask yourself: What is actually mine to do in this moment? Perhaps there is a phone call to make, a question to ask, or a practical decision to consider. Perhaps you have already done what you can, and the next faithful step is to rest.
Finding peace in God when anxious is often a practice of returning. Your thoughts may run ahead again. When they do, you can gently bring them back to this moment and remember that God is here with you.
Pause and return
If worry is pulling your thoughts in many directions, take a quiet minute with God:
- Notice. Name the worry without judging yourself for having it.
- Pray. Tell God plainly what you fear and what you need.
- Remember. Bring to mind the truth that He cares for you, even while the outcome is uncertain.
- Respond. Choose one faithful step you can take today, or give yourself permission to rest when there is no step to take yet.
You may need to repeat that practice more than once. Returning to God is not a failure of the first prayer. It is a way of continuing the conversation.
Peace does not always arrive as an immediate change in how you feel. Sometimes it begins as the quiet realization that you can be honest, take the next step, and trust God with what is still beyond your hands.
Meet me in this moment.
Father, You know what is weighing on my heart. I bring You the worries I can name and the ones I can barely explain. Help me attend to what is in front of me today. Give me wisdom for the steps I need to take and rest where I have reached the end of what I can do. Remind me that Your care does not leave me when I feel anxious. Teach me to return to You, one moment at a time. Amen.
